You can’t go to southern California and not enjoy a day at the beach. Has never disappointed.ĭay 3: La Jolla Shores Park (Free), Sunset Cliffs Natural Park If you have small kids and want to take a more leisurely day and have the vacation time, it might be worth planning on doing two days at the zoo.

The whole zoo can be done in a single day, but I would recommend getting up and going early since it is a full day. Even as adults, it is one of our favorite places. You can’t visit San Diego without going to the San Diego Zoo. Landed very late in the day so really just traveled to our hotel, grabbed a quick bite at the hotel and got to bed to be ready for Day 2. It was clean and served its purpose nicely.ĭay 1: Fly into San Diego and get to hotelĭay 4: Drive to Palm Springs, Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain, Slab City, Hotel Time (Free)ĭay 5: Palm Spring Aerial Tram and San Jacinto Mountain, Cabazon Outlets ($54 = 2 x $27)ĭay 7: Time at the Pool, Golfing (Driving Range) (Free)ĭay 8: Indian Canyon Hiking, Villagefest Palm Springs ($9)ĭay 9: Drive back to San Diego, downtown LaJolla (Free) We didn’t want to have to drive from Palm Springs and be at the airport by 5am. We had a very early flight on our final day, so this hotel was strictly chosen due to price and proximity to the airport. La Quinta Inn and Suites by Wyndham San Diego SeaWorld/Zoo (Feb 17 – Feb 18) If you plan to focus on the night life that Palm Springs has to offer, then you might want to stay closer, but for us it was perfect. The drive was only 10 minutes and there was plenty of parking so for the 2 or 3 times we went downtown, it was worth the savings. Originally, I was a little concerned about the proximity to downtown (was parking going to be an issue? was it too far?). Our balcony was the perfect place to drink coffee in the morning and wine in the afternoon. I’m so glad that he asked because we ended up in a room poolside with beautiful views of the pool and mountains. When we got to our room, we had a view of the street, so my husband thought it was worth asking to see if we could be poolside. We got to the hotel a little before check in and they were nice enough to set us up with a room. While we like to stay in places with their own kitchen (we don’t like to eat out every day), the DoubleTree did have a refrigerator and there was a grocery store right across the street, which enabled us to grab breakfast and other small items to have in the room. Ultimately, we went with the Double Tree. We finally got it down to Welk Resort Palm Springs (Had kitchens) and the Double Tree Palm Springs (Less expensive but no kitchen), Cathedral City. This brought us out to Cathedral City, while still a short drive from the center of town (10 min), hotels were about $50 a night cheaper and just as luxurious. While staying downtown would have been nice, we found that hotels further outside the heart of the city were less expensive and gave us more of the tropical feeling that we were looking for. We knew that we were going to want to spend some time lounging around the pool, going to the gym, going into town, and traveling around for some local hiking. I spent weeks looking back and forth between multiple hotels to find the right one for us. While it was not the nicest hotel that we have ever stayed, it served its purpose.ĭouble Tree by Hilton Hotels Palm Springs, Cathedral City (Feb 13 – Feb 17) This hotel was primarily chosen due to proximity to our friends and other tourist attractions in San Diego. We were lucky that our hotel had a little restaurant attached that wasn’t too bad but there were some hangry moments along the way.īest Western Seven Seas, San Diego (Feb 09 – Feb 12) I would recommend planning your food and either bringing some on the plane or planning to eat immediately upon landing. We did however, get to our hotel pretty late so we were both starving. We were visiting friends so we knew we wanted to at least fly into San Diego. We deliberated on flying home through Palm Springs however, San Diego offered direct flights to Boston for a much cheaper price so we decided to add the extra drive time.Īll flights and car rental were uneventful. We chose to fly in and out of San Diego and drive back and forth to Palm Springs (2:00-2:30 hrs). $815: DoubleTree Golf Resort Palm Springs, Cathedral CityĪlaskan Airlines flight 798: San Diego to Boston.$278: Best Western Seven Seas, San Diego.
